What is Hojicha Powder?

It smells like caramel, chocolate, and roasted almonds – and yet, it's a green tea? Welcome to the world of Hojicha! Its secret lies in the roasting process: the tea leaves are roasted at high temperatures, creating a warm, smoky-sweet flavor without the grassy or bitter notes typical of other green teas. As a fine powder, Hojicha is a delicious alternative to Matcha and is steadily making its way into cafés and tea bars across Europe. Perfect for those who love Matcha but prefer a milder, less grassy taste.

Hojicha vs. Matcha – More Than Just Powdered Tea

While both Hojicha Powder and Matcha are finely ground, they couldn't be more different. Matcha is made from shade-grown, chlorophyll-rich tea leaves, giving it an intense, green, slightly bitter flavor. Hojicha, on the other hand, is made from later-harvested leaves and becomes mild and nutty through roasting. Another key difference: Hojicha contains significantly less caffeine since the roasting process reduces it. This makes it a gentle alternative for those who appreciate green tea but prefer less caffeine.

How to Prepare Hojicha

Enjoy It Pure

Hojicha Powder is just as easy to prepare as Matcha: Sift two teaspoons of powder into a bowl to achieve a smooth and frothy texture. Heat water to about 70°C (160°F) and add 60 ml (2 oz) to the powder. Whisk vigorously with a bamboo whisk in a quick M-shaped motion for about 15 seconds until a fine foam appears. If you like it a bit sweeter, add sugar or honey to taste.

Hojicha Latte – Hot & Iced!

Our favorite way to enjoy it? A Hojicha Latte. If you have a milk frother, it's a breeze – just add your milk of choice and a teaspoon of sifted Hojicha Powder to the frother, mix, and you're done!

No frother? No problem! Prepare the Hojicha almost as usual: sift the powder into a bowl, add some 70°C (160°F) warm water, and whisk with a bamboo whisk. Use less water than usual to create a thicker consistency.

  • For a warm Hojicha Latte: Froth your milk, sweeten to taste, and pour it over the Hojicha concentrate – like a Hojicha Cappuccino!
  • For an iced version: Fill a glass with ice cubes, pour in cold milk, and slowly add the Hojicha on top. Watch as the layers beautifully blend together!
